8. One spelling that makes many sounds. The letter combination o-u-g-h can be said several ways.

Here are some examples:

/ʌf/ as in enough                                 /ʌf/ は「enough」のように

/aʊ/ as in drought                               /aʊ/ は「drought」のように

/uː/ as in through                               /uː/ は「through」のように

/oʊ/ as in although and though      /oʊ/ は「although」や「though」のように

/ɑː/ as in bought and thought         /ɑː/ は「bought」や「thought」のように

/ɒ:f/ as in cough                                /ɒ:f/ は「cough」のように

and /ʌp/ as in hiccough               そして /ʌp/ は「hiccough」のように

The word “hiccough” is more commonly spelled h-i-c-c-u-p but both spellings are acceptable.

「hiccough」は一般的にh-i-c-c-u-pと綴られますが、どちらの綴りも許容されます。
