Craig here with this week’s sports phrase! This is the second cricket phrase.
To be stumped
The stumps are the three sticks behind the batter in cricket.
If the little objects called bails on top of the sumps fall or are knocked off, the batter is out.
クリケットスではタンプというのは打者後ろにある三つの杭のことです。
杭の上にあるベイルというものが落ちるか落とされると、打者がアウトになります。
In daily conversation, we used it when we are confused about something or don’t understand.
日常会話では途方に暮れているか戸惑っているというようなニュアンスもあり状況や答えがわからないときによく使います。

For example:
Hey, do you understand this question? It’s really difficult, right?
ね、この問題って分かる？マジで難しいよね？
No, I have no idea. I’m totally stumped!
いや、さっぱり分からない！完全に戸惑っている。
