Ever wondered how to pronounce a new

word you have never seen before? How

about spelling a word you have never

heard before?

Well in our phonics course we are teaching

the students how to read and pronounce IPA

(International Phonetic Alphabet) sounds.

In our lesson today, we went over

/ɑ:/ v/ ɒ/ ɔ:/. For each sound we go

through the mouth position, words that use

that sound, sentences using those words and

finally tongue twisters.

Let’s take /ɒ/ɔ:/ for example. /ɒ/ makes

a short o sound. In a word, using IPA,

that would look like /wɒt/. this word

means /what/, we don’t pronounce the

letter h in this word.

You can see how hard it is for non-native

speakers to see a new word and pronounce

it without making mistakes!

私たちの発音法の授業では、IPA（国際音標文字）を使って、学生達にどのように読んで発音するのかを教えています。

今日のレッスンでは、/ɑ:/ v/ ɒ/ ɔ:/を学びました。音標文字ごとに口の位置、その音を使用する単語、その音を使用した文章、そして早口言葉をしました。

では、/ɒ/ɔ:/を例にとってみましょう。/ɒ/はoの音を短く発音します。要するに、IPAを使用すると、/wɒt/は単語の/what/です。この単語のhは発音しません。

ノンネイティブスピーカーにとって、IPAを知らずに発音するのが難しいことをわかって頂けると思います。
