This week we had a great session with the

students about making reservations.  We

use videos from youtubers to give examples

of real conversations and help students

understand differences between cultures.

We looked at booking an appointment at a

salon in New York.  First, we thought about

the steps of the conversation and what kind

of phrases we might hear.  For example,

greeting, making a request, checking

schedules and agreeing times.

Then we practiced linking words together

so that our English sounded more natural.

For example, how do you think you would

say this sentence?

“Hi, I wanted to make an appointment to

get my hair cut and coloured.”

When we link “wanted to”, “make an” and

“and” it can sound really different.

Try saying this sentence…  “Hi, I wanti t

meikun appointment t get my hair cut n

coloured.”

We practice these phrases in class to help

students understand natural English and

feel more confident about their

pronunciation.

今週は「予約の仕方」について、素晴らしい授業ができました。生徒たちがいろんな国の違いを分かるようにユーチューバーの動画を中心にしたいくつかのリアルな会話を聞きながら授業を進めます。

今回はニューヨークでの美容サロンの予約の仕方を勉強しました。まずは動画を見る前に、生徒たちに電話で予約するときの流れとどのような表現を使うかを考えさせました。たとえば、「あいさつ」、「お願いする」、　そして「時間やスケジュール確認」。その後は、より自然な発音に聞こえるように言葉のリンキングの練習もしました。

例えば、この文章なら普通はどうやって読みますか？“Hi, I wanted to make an appointment to get my hair cut and coloured.”  多くの英語学習者はそれぞれの言葉をきれいに発音しようとしますが、その必要はありません。

大事なところだけを強調して　“wanted to”、 “make an”、“to” そして “and ” という前置詞などをリンキングすると、上のような文章が言いやすくなり、より自然な英語の発音に近づきます。

次の文章を読んでみてください。“Hi, I wanti t meikun appointment t ge my hair cut n coloured.”

生徒が自然な英語が聞き取れるようになり、自分の英語の発音に自信を付けるために授業でこういう文章で練習しています。

＊「リンキング」とは、ネイティブが英語で話す際に「単語と単語を繋げる」という現象をさします。
